In the middle of the nationwide debt debate, Congressman Jim Langevin will be hosting a question and answer session for constituents during a live telephone town hall this evening at 5:30pm. The time may change, depending on changes in the House floor schedule.

“The debate over raising the debt ceiling and the makeup of the federal budget has enormous consequences for the economic prosperity of present and future generations,” said Langevin. “At this critical time, I believe it is important for me to engage with and speak directly to as many of my constituents as possible. A telephone town hall provides a great forum for a discussion between us and I look forward to answering their questions.”

Congressman Langevin responded to the President’s arrival at a deal with Congress leaders to raise the debt ceiling in advance of the deadline. He released the following statement last night:

“I have been urging everyone involved for many days and weeks to come to a fair compromise that takes a significant step toward reducing our debt, while ensuring the United States sends a clear message to the world that we will meet our obligations. In the end, I have consistently maintained, we need to have shared sacrifice to address our debt in a responsible way that does not place the burden solely on the middle class, seniors and our most vulnerable citizens who are already feeling the pressure of this economic downturn. I will be reviewing this legislation carefully in the coming hours to determine if it is something that I will be able to support.”

If you would like to listen to the town hall, you can dial into the call at 877-229-8493, PIN # 14699. If there are any changes to the time of the call, it will be posted on the town hall website, as well as its Facebook and Twitter pages.
